Category: Academic | Department: Faculty of Epidemiology & Population Health | Closing Date: 01 Jan 2018 | We have an exciting and challenging vacancy for an Assistant Professor in Medical Statistics and Epidemiology. They will be part of a collaborative team conducting research on the epidemiology and control of HIV and related infections, and other conditions of public health importance, in Tanzania. This research is carried out in collaboration with the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in Tanzania. The collaborative research programme in Mwanza is internationally recognised for a series of important contributions to research on the control of HIV and other STDs. The post holder will be employed as an academic member of staff of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), and will be based full-time in Mwanza.   The successful applicant will be a member of the Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU).  The Unit has been established by LSHTM and NIMR as a centre of excellence in clinical trials of HIV and related infections, and other conditions of public health importance in Tanzania, and is equipped to carry out trials to the highest international standards. The main responsibility of the post holder will be to provide statistical support in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials, epidemiological studies and community-based interventions carried out by MITU and its collaborators; and to contribute to training and mentoring of other statisticians working in MITU or NIMR Mwanza Centre. The post holder will also be a member of the MRC Tropical Epidemiology Group at LSHTM.   Applicants should have a postgraduate qualification in statistics, a PhD in a related discipline, practical experience of working as an applied statistician, experience of data analysis, experience of teaching or delivering professional training, and excellent managerial and communication skills. Further particulars are included in the attached job description.   The initial appointment will commence as soon as possible and funding is in place for 12 months. This overseas collaborative programme is long-term in nature and further extension of the position is possible subject to confirmation of funding.   The post will be based full-time in Mwanza. The salary will be on the Academic scale, Grade 7 scale in the range £44,978 - £51,490 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). Additional overseas allowances and benefits will be provided as appropriate. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff.
