Job description

A Research Assistant within the School of Life Sciences is required to assist with a short term food-based research project entitled ‘Enhanced antimicrobials for the food manufacturing industry’ funded by the BBSRC seeding catalyst programme and in collaboration with the National Centre for Food Manufacture at Holbeach.  Ideally you will have a strong background in microbiology and an interest in the food industry.

The post holder will be involved in laboratory-based studies to isolate bacteriophages for the food pathogen Listeria monocytogenes as a potential means of control on surfaces and equipment associated with the food manufacturing industry. The primary role will be to isolate and characterise relevant bacteriophages and create biofilm testing platforms of listeria on structured surfaces. The successful candidate will be able to compare various biocontrol strategies in vitro and in situ to achieve eradication. The work envisaged is with category 2 organisms and may involve occasional travel to our Holbeach campus.

This position does not fulfil the UK Visas & Immigration sponsorship criteria for Tier 2.
