About the Role

This post will provide technical support for the Flow Cytometry Service at the Barts Cancer Institute(BCI)/WHRI. 

The post-holder will be responsible for day-to-day operation, maintenance and quality control of cell-sorters/analysers and provide users support at all levels. A collaborative approach is essential to cover duties during colleagues' absences or high-demand periods.

Prior knowledge and hands-on experience with BDFACSAria sorters and analysers, along with a strong understanding of Diva software and multicolour Flow Cytometry principles, are essential. Additional training can be provided if needed.

 

About You 

You should have a relevant BSc or equivalent, with a strong background in cancer cell biology or immunology, along with the ability to design, conduct, and analyse complex flow cytometry-based cell assays. Knowledge of PBMC preparation, cell, and tissue culture is desirable. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, motivated to learn, capable of working both independently and as part of a team, with strong organizational skills, effective communication, and a focus on customer service. Prior experience in a flow cytometry core lab is highly desirable.

BCI is a Cancer Research UK Centre of Excellence whose work aims to transform the lives of those with/at risk of cancer through laboratory-based innovative research, in patients and populations. BCI is internationally renowned in many areas of cancer research. It combines ground-breaking basic research with the expertise of clinicians and scientists from the Centre for Experimental Cancer Medicine and the Barts NHS Trust to achieve improvements in cancer patient care. BCI is also a partner in the CRUK City of London Major Centre, which is a Centre of Excellence in Biotherapeutics. It?s one of six institutes within The School of Medicine and Dentistry.

  • Experience in the operation of flow cytometers

Working with the Director of HR Operations, Head of Contingent Workforce and Procurement Directorate, this role will be responsible for sourcing, collecting, organising, analysing and interrogating all recruitment related spend category data. The job holder will source and gather data from known/standard sources - manipulating routine data so it can be interpreted by others. They may be required to select the most appropriate procedure, technique or approach to conduct analysis and research, deciding how to undertake the work as well as analysing, identifying, and interpreting trends. The job holder will be expected to have excellent understanding of specialist tools to extract the data needed as well as an advanced knowledge of Excel, Power BI, Tableau etc. 

  •  Work with HR and Procurement teams to investigate and identify all agency and advertising recruitment spend using a variety of systems and platforms. 
  • Work with the Recruitment advisers to ascertain the actual status and outcome of all current vacancies.  
  • Collaboratively work with internal and external stakeholders to investigate and review the data required to complete the objective of reducing agency spend within Kings for non-permanent staff. 
  • Identify activity data for each vacancy advertisement, including views, impressions, applications, shortlisted candidates, and placements, to ascertain value for money and inform future decisions. 
  • Produce visualisations and reports (using tools like Tableau, Power BI, and SQL) and present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in a clear, actionable manner showing usage data and trends to inform future sourcing and hiring decisions.  
  • Create data dashboards, graphs and visualisations 
  • Work with the recruitment team to incorporate data capture and analysis.  
  • Support Manager with data analysis for all activity with all external providers.

Essential criteria

The research assistant will conduct statistical analysis with quantitative survey and administrative datasets, estimate regression models, conduct literature searches and reviews, work with geospatial maps, and prepare outputs in the form of tables, figures and presentation slides for a project titled ?Developing Youth Groups In Bangladesh To Support Peers At Risk Of Early Marriage?. This work will be carried out under the supervision of the project?s Principal Investigator.

Required experience/skills for this role include knowledge of, and experience working with, STATA and LaTeX.

Experience with Overleaf, geospatial software such as ArcGIS/QGIS, and ability to read and comprehend Bangla are desirable but not essential for the role.

The role-holder is also expected to have some PGT training in Economics, Statistics and Econometrics and prior research experience.

To be a model for Year 2 MBBS students to perform a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). You will be required to lie on a couch for up to 2 hours (inclusive of breaks) with the torso exposed so the students can practice performing an electrocardiogram. This task involves placing adhesives and electrodes on the surface of the exposed chest wall to obtain a tracing of your heart's electrical activity. The students will operate the machine to obtain the ECG and interpret the findings. Each session is divided into two 45 minute segments with about 15 students per session. The students will rotate during the session to enable them all to operate the ECG machine and practice placing the electrodes on the chest wall at the correct positions. The session is facilitated by a medical education fellow.
