Job Description

PURPOSE OF POST



The University is looking a for an experienced technician to provide short term cover for its Structures and Concrete Testing Laboratory. The post holder will work closely with research active academics preparing samples for project work, undertaking testing of materials, and contributing to the evaluation of the outputs.



 



The post holder will play an active role in providing undergraduate and post graduate students with hands-on experience with the investigative techniques used when developing/testing materials used in the Built Environment and Architecture.



 



As an integrated member of the technical team, the post holder will work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure the smooth running of the Structures and Concrete Testing Laboratory, including appropriate risk management, operational maintenance, compliance with Health and Safety regulations and contributing to high standards of operational practice. 



 



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES



1.       Provide high quality technical support in relation to the use and application of specialist testing, investigative, and analytical equipment in the Structures and Concrete Testing Laboratory.



 



2.       Actively contribute to the design, development, and implementation of equipment and/or experimental apparatus for teaching and explorative studies. This will typically include collaborating with colleagues to develop data collection strategies, planning system configurations, and assisting with experimentation and testing.



 



3.       Work in close collaboration with colleagues (technical and academic), to ensure the effective operation of the designated laboratories, ensuring appropriate levels of support are provided to staff, students, and other key customers.



 



4.       Play an active role in the delivery of induction sessions and technical workshops so that users of the facilities can confidently use these resources in a safe and competent manner.



 



5.       Undertake diagnostic evaluation of hardware/software systems, with the ability to recommend solutions and/or provide directive guidance for students/staff or other interested parties.



 



6.       Provide colleagues with expert technical advice in relation to the procurement, use and implementation of technologies associated with the designated laboratories.



 



7.       Responsible for ensuring the effective maintenance of specialist equipment in the designated areas of responsibility, including installation and hardware support, consulting with colleagues and external partners as required to ensure that laboratory systems remain operational.



 



8.       Undertake administrative duties, including preparing reports and overseeing the management of documentation relevant to the area of responsibility. (For example, risk assessments, equipment audits, resource procurement and Health and Safety records).



 



9.       Work closely with and be able to deputise for technical colleagues, including rota duty cover for evening or extra-curricular support.



 



10.      Ensure that the designated areas are used appropriately and that activities within adhere to the University’s policies and procedures (including Health and Safety, Data Protection, and Equality and Diversity).



 



11.      Maintain, develop, and broaden their own knowledge of relevant processes and systems, continually evaluating and implementing key technical advances in line with professional practice.



 



12.      Undertake other temporary duties commensurate with the level of the role, as agreed through the appropriate line management structure to meet the requirements of the department.



 



It is expected that the post holder will not normally take annual leave during key points in the academic calendar, and that due to the nature of work patterns in this sector they may be required to assist with cover of events scheduled outside of normal core hours.



 



Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant Engineering discipline, plus significant experience of working in a relevant technical / scientific laboratory environment.

Able to demonstrate a comprehensive working knowledge of Civil engineering principles as these relate to



 




  • Composition, casting and curing of concrete /composite beams, and the effective testing of these and other specified beam samples.



 




  • Ability to effectively setup, operate and maintain the range of equipment used to test the compressive strengths of materials used in a wide range of Civil Engineering applications.



 



Health and Safety



Able to demonstrate a practical understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act and its application to risk management in professional / educational environments.

  • escorting candidates from the examination venue during the examinations as required, and supervising candidates whilst outside the examination venue;
  • collecting and collating scripts at the end of the examination in accordance with strict procedures
  • assisting with the preparation of script envelopes
  • supervising candidates leaving the examination venues, ensuring that candidates do not remove equipment or stationery from the venue without authorisation and ensuring that candidates leave in an orderly and quiet manner

This is a role for an experienced research administrator to support with the ongoing establishment of the University’s research culture agenda. The successful candidate will work closely with the Dean of Research Culture and will engage with University academics and relevant research leads in areas such as Research Governance Ethics & Integrity, Centre for Research Staff Development, Libraries and Collections and HR to plan and kickstart a portfolio of research culture projects that will have University-wide impact, ensuring close strategic alignment across all stakeholders.



The priorities for the post holder during the three-month period will be to enact recommendations from a recently completed external review on research culture at King’s, specifically:




  1. To review the role of the established Research Culture Committee and make recommendations on any further developments required

  2. To develop a University wide research culture survey, working with key stakeholders on content and delivery and managing and summarising responses.

  3. To work with faculties to identify mechanisms for identifying local research culture priorities 

  4. To support with the development of roles and responsibilities for substantive research culture posts



Qualifications

Candidates will need to have either a degree and 2 years of relevent administarive experience in a HEI or, have significant research support experience.

The Student Ambassador Admin Assistant is responsible for a range of administrative duties to ensure the efficient running of the Student Ambassador programme, as well as supporting with other administrative tasks for the Widening Participation and Outreach team. Tasks include:

  • Act as a point of contact for the student ambassador scheme, and anyone booking ambassador via email, over the phone or in person
