CHILDREN, YOUTH, PEACE AND THE ARTS RESEARCH GROUP (CYPA).

TERMS OF REFERENCE:

 RESEARCH ASSISTANT

SCOPE AND PURPOSE

As the first research cluster on children, youth, the arts and peacebuilding at King?s, the CYPA brings together all who share a vision and commitment to incorporating the arts including but not limited to music, poetry, drama, dance, painting, film, textiles, sculpture, graffiti, digital arts and photography, when involving children and youth in peacebuilding efforts across war-torn and post-war contexts. The CYPA membership is open to established academics, PhD students, early-career researchers and practitioners in these areas, both in the UK and internationally, with the aim of fostering collaboration and transdisciplinary dialogue. We also work with experts, including practitioners and policy makers, on issues related to children/youth and peacebuilding, arts and peacebuilding, and the nexus of all three (children/youth, the arts, and peacebuilding). We provide a platform for all members to showcase their innovative research and impact in these areas and provide a stimulating, welcoming environment for transdisciplinary networking between researchers, policy makers and practitioners who work for and with children.

 

The appointed research assistant will be expected to undertake activities as set out in this (non-exhaustive and evolving) Terms of Reference to support the academic leadership of the CYPA.

RESPONSIBILITES AND DUTIES OF RA (not exhaustive)
  • Opening and closing of CYPA membership form [MS Forms].
  • Updating of mailing list/s.
  • Sending out of information emails to membership from CYPA inbox [once a month unless urgent opportunity or member event has come up that needs circulating].
  • Organisation of CYPA Seminar Series (organising schedule of already confirmed speakers, matching presenter with a facilitator from within CYPA membership, circulating advance copies of papers and presentations for chair if available, promotion to members by email and linking with SoSS comms for recordings).
  • Organising meetups at conferences and other events as directed by SP and JR.
  • Management of Twitter/X (@CYPA_KCL) according to guidelines.
  • Attend events as member of CYPA where required.
  • Literature review of children arts and peacebuilding sources upto 8000 words (before March 2025).
  • Organising writing workshop in February. In person at King?s.
  • Other duties as agreed with RA and as they arise.

This position entails working as a research assistant for a study that investigates the processing of non-standard grammatical constructions in speakers of British English using eye-tracking while reading. The project is led by Eloi Puig-Mayenco from the School of Education, Communication, and Society at King?s College London.

 

The primary responsibilities of the research assistant will involve overseeing participant recruitment and conducting on-site eye-tracking data collection sessions at the Waterloo Bridge Wing building, located on the Waterloo campus. Additionally, the RA will handle initial data trimming and processing. The breakdown of allocated hours for each task is as follows:

 

15 hours for preparation, training, and meetings.

40 hours for testing: accommodating 40 participants with sessions lasting 1 hours each.

5 hours for data processing.

 

The research assistant will receive comprehensive training and mentoring to successfully carry out these responsibilities.

 

Interviews will take place mid-January.

 



Qualifications

BA/MA in Linguistics, Psychology or related discipline. 

 



Skills

Essential:

Familiarity and ability to use Microsoft packages (e.g., good Excel command).

Undergraduate level knowledge in linguistics, psychology and/or education research or related field.

 

Desirable:

Interest in eye-tracking methodologies.

Experience with statistical analysis applied to language-related research.

 

This position entails working as a research assistant for a study that investigates the development of Catalan as a heritage language in the United Kingdom. The project is led by Eloi Puig-Mayenco from the School of Education, Communication, and Society at King?s College London.

The primary responsibilities of the research assistant will involve overseeing participant recruitment and conducting remote participant in two testing sessions in a battery of tasks (assessment of receptive vocabulary, production of specific syntactic structures and elicitation of spontaneous production data). Additionally, the RA will handle initial data trimming and processing. The breakdown of allocated hours for each task is as follows:

1. 30 hours for preparation, training, and finalizing materials.

2. 100 hours for testing: accommodating 40 participants in two sessions lasting 1 hour each hours, alongside organization of the data from testing sessions for 30 minutes. In total, the RA will spend 2.5 hour per participant.

3. 20 hours for initial data trimming.

 

The research assistant will receive comprehensive training and mentoring to successfully carry out these responsibilities.

 

Interviews will take place mid-January.

 



Qualifications

BA/MA in Linguistics, Education, Psychology or related discipline.

Excellent working proficiency in both Catalan and English

DBS certificate
