Job Description

There is an exciting opportunity exists for a postgraduate student to work within the Global Diversities and Inequalities Research Centre (https://www.londonmet.ac.uk/research/centres-groups-and-units/global-diversities-and-inequalities-research-centre/).



We would like to appoint a part-time Research Assistant to work on the research project 'An evaluation of the Syrian and Afghan resettlement programmes in Islington'. The post is part-time for 3 hours per week from October 2023 to mid-June 2024.



Key areas:



The successful candidate should have an interest in the areas of work of the Centre, such as migration, ethnicity, gender, inequalities, diversity, as well as good administrative skills.



Main duties and responsibilities:



1. Assist in interpreting during interviews and follow-up interviews with Afghans. Priority will be given to native speakers of Farsi and other languages spoken in Afghanistan.



2. Assist in checking the transcripts of our interviews.



3. Join the research team, attend monthly meetings and work under the supervision of senior members of staff.



4. Assist in the planning and implementation of specific research activities, as directed, such as liaising with external stakeholders and helping with the recruitment of study participants.



4. Conduct literature searches according to parameters agreed by the research team and in line with the research aims and design.



5. Assist with data collection, including conducting interviews, focus groups, administering questionnaires (as appropriate).



6. Assist the team leader in the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data.



7. Assist with the presentation of information on research progress and outcomes to relevant audiences (e.g. funders, key stakeholders, user groups etc).



8. Contribute to the documentation of the results arising from research activities.



9. Contribute to the publication of research findings in appropriate publications in collaboration with other team members.

The candidates must be enrolled in the Postgraduate Research programe at London Metropolitan University.

1. Relevant experience: native speakers of Farsi and other languages spoken in Afghanistan; Experience of admin tasks; Experience of working effectively as a member of a team; ability to set up a data base



2. Education and training: Postgraduate research student with good administrative and practical skills.



3. General and special knowledge: Interest in and familiarity with the work of the centre with an interest in the areas of work undertaken by the centre (such as migration, ethnicity, gender, inequalities, diversities etc) 



4. Skills and abilities: Understanding of and ability to contribute to administrative duties; Effective communication skills, both written and verbal skills;



Ability to work independently and seek guidance where appropriate; Proven ability to work and deliver to specified deadlines.

About this project:

Eye-tracking technology has emerged as a valuable tool in understanding cognitive processes, particularly in neurodivergent populations. However, despite its widespread use, there's a growing recognition that traditional eye-tracking methodologies may not adequately capture the perspectives of neurodivergent individuals, especially regarding Social Attention?defined as the spontaneous allocation of attention to social stimuli and interactions.

 

Our study exploring the perspective of neurodivergent children and their families on eye-tracking. This project aims to rethink eye-tracking to authentically capture neurodivergent perspectives by engaging neurodivergent children and their families with a parent discussion group and playful activities designed to help children highlight their views and priorities.

We are looking for one student research assistant, to help with smoothing running of the project, example tasks involve: communicating with participants, to arrange study time, to understand what they need; to be involved in the study, note taking.

About this role:

This project is a qualitative project, involves in working with vulnerable group of families. Therefore, we look for someone who is empathetic and patient, a desire to work with children, great communication skills, keen interest in neurodivergent research, passionate about qualitative research, an open-minded approach towards neurodivergent population.

This role is funded at an hourly rate of ?13.64 / hour.

This position entails working as a research assistant for a study that investigates the processing of non-standard grammatical constructions in speakers of British English using eye-tracking while reading. The project is led by Eloi Puig-Mayenco from the School of Education, Communication, and Society at King?s College London.

 

The primary responsibilities of the research assistant will involve overseeing participant recruitment and conducting on-site eye-tracking data collection sessions at the Waterloo Bridge Wing building, located on the Waterloo campus. Additionally, the RA will handle initial data trimming and processing. The breakdown of allocated hours for each task is as follows:

 

15 hours for preparation, training, and meetings.

40 hours for testing: accommodating 40 participants with sessions lasting 1 hours each.

5 hours for data processing.

 

The research assistant will receive comprehensive training and mentoring to successfully carry out these responsibilities.

 

Interviews will take place mid-January.

 



Qualifications

BA/MA in Linguistics, Psychology or related discipline.
