Kings Food the internal catering department of Kings College London are looking to recruit a catering assistant with barista skills to work on our 



As a catering assistant you will be involved with all aspects of the catering service including basic food preparation, food service, till operation, barista coffee making, food hygiene and other duties associated with the running of the Colleges retail units.

This post will be offered on an a temporary contract.  




Qualifications

Desirable Criteria:



1.       NVQ Level 1 or equivalent catering qualification 



2.       Hold a current food handlers’ certificate 



Skills

  • Assist with the service of meals in the restaurants, mobile units, and coffee shops.  

  • Maintain high levels of hygiene and comply with all food hygiene regulations. 

  • Display all food and beverages in a neat, appealing, and safe way. 

  • Stock retail display units and replenish as required. 

  • Operate a till and maintain accurate receipting of all payments.  

  • Actively promote and sell the catering services to customers. 

  • Respond to requests for information from customers. 

  • Keep servery and retails areas tidy and clean.

Job Description

As part of this role, you will be working closely with the Risk group convenors to ensure regular activities are organised. Core responsibilities associated with this role include:

  • Support with the organisation of a number of seminars (e.g., logistics; advertising);
  • Collating and sending occasional newsletters to the group;
  • Help support and disseminate other relevant events and initiatives;
  • Managing the RISK mailing list (e.g., adding new members, responding to emails);
  • Managing social media channels: Twitter;
  • Raising awareness about the group and its activities, in particular with new students and staff in relevant research fields

Depending on your interest other activities can be undertaken, e.g., developing a number of posters for the annual Society for Risk Analysis-Europe meeting; organise activities related to specific event (e.g., Sustainability month; Pint of Science Festival).

This role will cover the period October 2024-June 2025.

The Risk and Society research group was formed a number of years ago to provide a collaborative focus for the wide range of interdisciplinary research issues relating to the broader risk field ranging from risk communication,  risk analysis, risk governance, regulation, resilience, and risk management.  In the past we have worked on a number of topics including floods, health and safety, wild fires and food safety. The Risk and society group has existed for more than 10 years and depending on the year in question gathers 20 or so academics at different career stages (PhD, PDRAs, Lecturers, Prof.). The group provides a lively space for interdisciplinary conversations on various aspects relating to the broader area of risk and society. Activities organised in previous years include internal events (e.g., seminars), and ad hoc external events (e.g., ESRC social science festival; contribution to Pint of Science). The scope of activities is always evolving and open to new suggestions.

Research Assistance for Assessment Innovation Project.

The post holder will undertake a literature review to support research on exciting new assessment innovations currently being trialled in 3rd year UG and MA politics modules in SSPP.  

The post holder will be fully briefed once selected, and there will be regular check ins with the PI over the course of the work, but in broad terms, the literature review will be designed to fulfil three tasks: 

Identify good examples of methodologically similar projects to understand best practice ahead of undertaking empirical research 

Identify and categorise relevant conceptual debates in pedagogy journals to quickly relate the assessment innovations being trialled to current research 

Provide an exhaustive list of research outputs which cover similar assessment innovations to those in this project.  

The literature review will produce a final report encompassing all of the above tasks, which will be used use to assist in fine tuning the project methodology and for drafting the published academic work arising from the project in 2025.  

Work must be conducted in semester 1, i.e. before Christmas, and ideally by end of November, but there is flexibility in terms of when the work hours are completed. Work can mostly be conducted remotely.

Total hours for the project = 103 hours

Bachelors or Masters degree in any subject. Ideally a degree in education, pedagogy or closely related fields.

Experience in performing literature reviews in academic contexts
