Research Assistant

Job Description

In this role you will be working on a project writing a toolkit on gender quotas, reserved seating and other mechanisms to introduce more women into parliaments for an international parliamentary organisation.

It will involve:

  • exploring and summarising existing academic literature, reports and findings from other international institutions and evidence on gender quotas and other equality mechanisms;
  • making simple graphs and charts using publicly available data to show the impact of quotas;
  • finding evidence and experiences of MPs from countries where quotas and other mechanisms have been introduced on how they came about, and difficulties with them; and writing up findings into a report and toolkit aimed at a non-academic audience.

 

There is a total of 105 hours of work available for this role.

 

 



Qualifications

Masters degree in Public Policy, Politics or a similar subject

 



Skills

Necessary

  • Experience of conducting a literature review.
  • Experience writing for non-academic audiences.
  • Understanding of parliamentary systems.
  • Ability to making charts on Excel.
  • Ability to use Word.
  • Ability to write to speed.

 

Desirable

  • Experience conducting elite interviews.
  • Understanding of gender equality mechanisms.

We're looking for organised, reliable, and empathetic individuals to join our pool of Invigilators at King's College London. This crucial role ensures the smooth running of exams, helping students perform their best. The position is on an as-needed basis throughout the year, with most sessions taking place during our main exam periods in January, May, and August.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up exam venues with stationery, equipment, and papers according to procedures.
  • Announce exam rules and answer sheet completion instructions.
  • Ensure candidates follow venue rules (no talking, phones in bags, no hats).
  • Invigilate exams, address candidate queries and manage irregularities.
  • Check attendance during exams.
  • Supervise candidates during breaks (e.g. toilet breaks).
  • Collect and organise exam scripts post-exam.

 

The above list of responsibilities is not exhaustive, and you will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope of this position, as directed by the Head Invigilator or Examinations Office Staff.

Please note, we are unable to accept applications from current students unless you are a PhD student. While we do conduct exams across Central London, most of the work takes place at the ExCel Centre. You must be able to commute to this site, and the working hours will be 7:30am-7pm.

The Centre of European Law at King's College London is seeking a research assistant. 

The research assistant will help with completing a literature review, as well as background initial research (ECJ case law, EU institutions documents and reports, possibly national legislation) on the rule of law and independence of judiciary. They will help with contacting and liaising with various potential partners on the project, as well as organising several in-person events in London. They will collaborate with the grants and the events team at The Dickson Poon School of Law in carrying out their tasks.

PhD in relevant subject



Skills

The research assistant will be a doctoral or a postdoctoral researcher seeking to obtain experience with writing a large grant application. EU law knowledge is required, as well as experience in researching EU law databases. Knowledge in the area of the rule of law, independence of the judiciary, judicial politics is desirable. Working knowledge of one or more of the following languages is a plus: French, German, Polish, Italian.
