Project title: Sustainability in the Curriculum: Queen Mary Green Space for Sustainability Awareness

Summary of the project: We are seeking motivated and passionate students to join the 'Sustainability in the Curriculum: Queen Mary Green Space for Sustainability Awareness' project. As a student co-creator, you will collaborate with academics to develop an innovative, non-credit sustainability course open to Queen Mary staff, students, and the East London community. 

This course focuses on sustainability awareness, knowledge, and skills, with content centered around the UN Sustainable Development Goals and UNESCO sustainability competencies.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with academics to co-create a sustainability course, ensuring an engaging and impactful learning experience.
  • Develop and deliver engaging content for social media, newsletters, and the Queen Mary website, adhering to institutional communications and marketing guidelines.
  • Create targeted email campaigns to inform and inspire participation, including crafting compelling messages and calls to action.
  • Organise promotional events, both online and on campus, to attract participants and raise awareness.
  • Work with the project team to maintain consistent messaging, branding, and tone across all communications.
  • Track, analyse, and evaluate the effectiveness of marketing activities and module engagement to inform future strategies.
  • Synthesise diverse ideas and aspects of the module into cohesive communications, including promotional videos, course introductions, and campaign materials.

Essential:

  • Strong interest in and understanding of sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Good grasp of marketing principles, social media strategies, and audience engagement.
  • Strong copywriting, interpersonal, and communication skills to engage diverse audiences.
  • Experience with social media platforms and digital marketing tools such as TikTok, Instagram, Outlook, and Mailchimp.
  • Ability to create and manage targeted email campaigns.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills to develop innovative ways of promoting the module.
  • Organisational skills to manage timelines, events, and promotional campaigns.

 

Desired:

  • Familiarity with video creation, including scripting, directing, and editing promotional videos.
  • Ability to condense complex ideas into clear, engaging messages.

This theme covers the following Sustainable Development Goals:

  • SDG5 Gender equality
  • SDG11 Sustainable cities and communities
  • SDG16 Peace, justice and strong institutions
  • SDG17 Partnership for the goals

Key Responsibilities:

  • Produce tangible outputs that contribute directly to the development and delivery of the Sustainability Course. This includes:
  • Work with the Project Manager to research, create, and refine content for your assigned theme, ensuring it is ready for course implementation.
  • Co-create high-quality module content in partnership with academic leads, ensuring relevance and academic rigour.
  • Generate ideas for course design, ensuring materials are engaging, inclusive, and impactful.
  • Assist in the planning and facilitation of workshops with internal and external sustainability experts to enhance course content.
  • Support the development of interdisciplinary, community-based learning activities that connect students with real-world sustainability challenges.

 

  • Expected Output:
    Your work will result in a well-developed, interdisciplinary sustainability module, ready for piloting and long-term integration into the university curriculum. You will be expected to take ownership of your tasks, collaborate effectively, and contribute proactively towards meeting key project milestones.

  • Working / study background in Sustainable Communities and Governance.
  • Strong interest in and understanding of sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals within your theme and be able to demonstrate this.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with students, academics, and professionals across diverse disciplines to co-create educational content.
  • Openness to innovation with a proactive approach to incorporating new ideas and creative methods in course design.
  • Clear communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly.
  • Proficiency in using digital tools and online platforms, demonstrating confidence in navigating virtual learning environments.
  • Good knowledge in digital content creation using online learning platforms such as QMplus or equivalent.
  • Analytical and conceptual thinking to interpret and communicate complex ideas in a structured and accessible way for module development.
  • Good organisational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple project tasks efficiently.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and continuous improvement, with a willingness to take initiative, adapt to challenges, and contribute actively to project success.
