Moving Image Annotator (film Specialist)

 

Job Description

The post holder will support academic staff by producing high-quality annotation of films for the research project Sculpting Time with Computers, led by Dr Daniel Ch?vez Heras. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Access a shared repository of video files. 
  • Watch 30 feature films ~25hrs 
  • Perform data annotations about these films using a per-defined schema. 
  • Deliver the annotations in the agreed format file. 
  • Verify the accuracy and validity of annotations with the project?s PI.

Work Environment and Culture

The post holder will contribute to a research project led by Dr Ch?vez Heras (PI) in collaboration with King?s Digital Lab, through the production of high-quality annotations over a range of 30 films. The post holder will be given detailed instructions, including an annotations schema and access to the films through their KCL credentials. The PI will ensure these instructions are understood and access to the material is granted. The post holder will be responsible for organising their individual watching and annotating tasks independently, ensuring that the annotations are delivered in time to keep with the project milestones. 

The post holder will be responsible for organising to watch and annotate these films using their own equipment or suitable college equipment they already have access to (e.g. laptop or desktop computer). 

The post holder will be given due credit for their contribution as a specialist human annotator in all relevant research outputs that result from the project. 

Reporting Structure

The post holder will report directly to the PI. It is not expected that additional reporting will be needed to other stake holders. 

Performance Metrics and Objectives:  

The post holder?s performance will be measured against the successful delivery of high-quality annotations. Key metrics to determine the quality of deliverables include number, accuracy, quality, and timeliness of the annotation files. Targets for these will be pre-agreed with the PI before any annotation work is undertaken. 

Training and Support

Relevant training will be provided as a 1hr session in which the post holder will learn to: 

  • Access the file repository using KCL credentials 
  • Use the schema to perform the annotations 
  • Submit the annotation files for revision 
  • Optionally, the post holder is welcome to join future project meetings as an observer to learn more about how their annotations will be used for research. 


Qualifications

Film & Media Studies or equivalent qualification at degree level of above. 



Skills

Organisational skills: organise the purposeful individual watching of 30 feature length films. 

Digital skills: efficient use of digital tools to watch and annotate the films. Specifically, basic usage of a media player (E.g. VLC or equivalent), and a text editor (e.g. notepad or equivalent). 

Communication skills: ability to communicate effectively in an academic environment.

The Centre of European Law at King's College London is seeking a research assistant. 

The research assistant will help with completing a literature review, as well as background initial research (ECJ case law, EU institutions documents and reports, possibly national legislation) on the rule of law and independence of judiciary. They will help with contacting and liaising with various potential partners on the project, as well as organising several in-person events in London. The research assistant will be a doctoral or a postdoctoral researcher seeking to obtain experience with writing a large grant application. EU law knowledge is required, as well as experience in researching EU law databases. Knowledge in the area of the rule of law, independence of the judiciary, judicial politics is desirable. Working knowledge of one or more of the following languages is a plus: French, German, Polish, Italian. 

  • Perform intense desktop research on ?middle powers? within International Relations Theory, especially in relation to Africa. 
  • Read and gather all relevant information and data related to the above topic. 
  • Establish literature availability as well as collate and examine relevant literature sources to produce :
    • A ?data dump? of relevant material
    • A literature review document across the research topic, 1500-2000 words.
  • Consider and highlight interesting avenues of enquiry that emerge from the research, and list possible further research questions. 
  • Compile bibliography (with abstracts or summary) of any and all sources consulted throughout the research.

Experience researching and learning International Relations Theory generally and Middle Powers in particular

Experience in compiling and producing a literature review

Reporting to Dr Eddy Tam, Lecturer in Economics King's Business School. The role is primarily focussed on digitizing research data (census tables) from scanned images (using computer software and data entry work)
