Research Assistant

The role may involve: 

• Writing descriptions of research clusters and other initiatives of the department. 
• Collecting information from colleagues about their research strengths and publicising these. 
• Identifying and acquiring visuals and other graphics for the website. 
• Recording audiovisual material and interviews with staff in the department. 
• Managing and establishing social media accounts for the department.

The ideal candidate will have: 

• Experience or interest in recording video and audio material. 
• Knowledge of different social media platforms. 
• Good teamworking skills and some basic IT skills. 

We are recruiting two NMES students returning to King?s from their placement year in September 2023.  

You will support the Global Placements Adviser for the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences, with placement marketing, student recruitment and placement events, with the goal of promoting the value of placements and using your experience to inspire other students to do it.

Objectives

To increase interest of Placements within the 1st and 2nd year cohorts in NMES through supporting Global Placement Events, writing blogs and sharing your experience  

To convey the student experience perspective at placement student and employer events.  

To provide peer support/insider hints & tips to Y1 and Y2 students on the placement recruitment process to increase chances of students securing opportunities.

Activities

To write blogs for the Global Placements Blog Series & careers blog.

To speak at induction/placement student & employer events about their own experiences.

To attend student recruitment events alongside the Faculty Placements Team (open days, offer holder days) to answer questions prospective students? questions for new Year in Industry courses.

To support placement CV and application drop-ins to answer questions students have about what the placement application process is like.

To support the NMES Placement team by undertaking relevant data analysis and making proposals to improve service offering.

Creating and facilitating a workshop to support 2nd year undergraduate students.

Any other marketing activities, such as attendance at prospective student events, which are relevant to Placements.

Role Criteria

As part of your application and the interview process, you will be scored against the following criteria:

Demonstration of enthusiasm for the role to be able promote placements with passion

Ability to reflect on the value of your placement experience to promote them to eligible and prospective students

Ability to reflect on practical experiences gained and how the experience has influenced your own professional identity and personal views

Ability to communicate in fluent spoken and written English

As part of this role, you will be working closely with the PEBES convenors to ensure regular activities are organised. Core responsibilities associated with this role include: 

Being an active member of PEBES; 

Support with the organisation of monthly seminars (e.g., logistics; advertising); 

Collating and sending monthly newsletters to the group;  

Help support and disseminate other relevant events and initiatives; 

Managing the PEBES mailing list (e.g., adding new members, responding to emails);  

Managing social media channels: Twitter; PEBES WhatsApp group; PEBES MS teams channel; 

Raising awareness about the group and its activities, in particular with new students and staff in relevant research fields 

Depending on your interest other activities can be undertaken, e.g., contribute to the Biodiversity Initiative at KCL; organise activities related to specific event (e.g., Sustainability month; Pint of Science Festival).

The Political Ecology, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (PEBES) research group has been formed to provide a collaborative focus for the wide range of interdisciplinary research on environmental conservation, resource management, and the social (re)production of nature which is undertaken in the Geography Department. PEBES is in its 3rd year of existence and currently gathers around 50 academics at different career stages (PhD, PDRAs, Lecturers, Prof.). The group provides a lively space for interdisciplinary conversations on various aspects of environmental challenges. Activities organised in previous years include internal events (e.g., seminars on rewilding, introduction to Political Ecology, urban ecology, sessions on peer-review), ad hoc external events (e.g., ESRC social science festival; contribution to Pint of Science), and an annual Away Day. The scope of activities is always evolving and open to new suggestions.
