Student Support Worker for Workshop and Lab Assistance

Job Description

This role is to provide Workshop and Lab Assistance and Notetaking support for a student with a visual impairment. To ensure widening participation and access, academic progress, and student retention in compliance with the Equality Act and the mission of Student Services. This position will be 12 hours per week and paying £13.67 per hour plus holiday pay.



 



Main responsibilities:




  • To produce accurate, unbiased, comprehensive, and legible handwritten or typed records of the content of lectures, seminars, discussions, off-campus events and other taught sessions in the student’s preferred style and format.

  • To make notes that contain pertinent information from the session. This may include: any questions and discussions that take place, diagrams, and references to any hand-outs.

  • To provide these notes in the agreed format within a specified timeframe.

  • To help students search library catalogues, locate materials, collect materials, photocopying etc.

  • To read directly to the student and/or onto audio tape or other recording media for a student whose disability makes reading or other forms of accessing text impossible.

  • To support a student in gaining access to the practical aspects of their course, e.g. in the laboratory or in a workshop/studio situation.

  • To assist students by providing typed transcription of audio or video recordings.

  • To provide social support to ensure students can access the wider aspects of student life.

  • To liaise directly with the student being supported to arrange locations/times etc. and to hold regular reviews with the student to assess how well the support is working.

  • To record the hours, you have worked and submit accurate timesheets.

  • To work in accordance with the Code of Practice for support workers.

  • To work in accordance with Health and Safety Legislation.

  • To be conversant with fire and emergency procedures.



 



Qualifications

To be educated to at least second year degree level in a relevant course.



Skills

Experience: To have experience of undergraduate study, to have experience of working with disabled people and experience working in a lab, either professionally or at a university level.



Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Clear and legible handwriting. Ability to type quickly with accurate spelling and grammar skills. Experience or an understanding of providing support for disabled adults. Good working knowledge of the laboratory and workshops. Desirable to have a familiarity with the subject, specific vocabulary, and technical language (Student is undertaking a 2nd year Biomedical Engineering undergraduate course). Thorough knowledge of the Queen Mary campus and awareness of disability issues.



Attitude and Disposition: Outgoing; good communication skills. Must be able to work calmly under pressure. Must be able to organise and manage fluctuating workloads. Must be willing to undertake training in note-taking and other relevant training sessions, as arranged by the Disability and Dyslexia Service.

Lectures and IT classes:



Mondays 9am – 12pm, 2pm – 4pm



Thursday 11am – 1pm, 5pm – 6pm



Friday 9am – 10am, 2pm – 4pm, 5pm – 6pm



 



Labs:



Tuesdays 11am – 12pm commencing 27th Feb



Wednesdays 11am – 1pm commencing 27th March



Other: Able to work after 5pm occasionally, to work across different sites, i.e., Queen Mary campuses.

The successful candidate will review a set of lecture notes and slides designed for an undergraduate mathematics course. The course covers fundamental topics such as basic mathematical functions, trigonometry, differentiation, integration, and introductory probability theory and inference.

The candidate?s primary responsibility will be to help to bridge the gap between mathematics and the natural sciences by relating the mathematical content to examples from the sciences and by linking the mathematical formalism to conventions (mathematical notation  etc.) more commonly used in scientific disciplines. The Marketing & Communications Assistant sits within the Student Careers Engagement (SCE) team within the department. The SCE team supports students at all levels across the institution, as well as alumni, to access information, advice, events, opportunities, and e-learning, to aid them in their career journeys. As a team, we also work specifically to address the sector-wide and institutional factors and barriers that contribute to differences in progression amongst students from underrepresented backgrounds. 

About the Role  

The Marketing & Communications Assistant will work closely with the Marketing & Communications Officer to plan and execute the communication plan for King?s Careers & Employability.  Key projects will include planning and executing communications for the core events and opportunities we run in the Autumn term, creating and managing a pool of collaborative content, and ensuring we collect engagement-related data to inform our communication activities. The post-holder will also be required to produce engaging design work for print, social media, and other online assets, using our branding guidelines. You will work closely with other colleagues across the department, working on multiple projects simultaneously.  

This role would suit someone who is looking to gain experience in marketing and communications, as well as working in a Higher Education context. 

Key Responsibilities  

  1. Designing a range of engaging content, in line with the department?s branding guidelines.  
  2. Assisting with planning and executing marketing and communications campaigns, promoting our key services and events to students. 
  3. Assisting with creating content to grow and develop our social media platforms.

We are looking for a researcher to join us on a flexible basis to assist with our project ?Exploring the longer-term career progression of researchers in the university environment?. This project is funded by Research England.   

The project aim is to uncover the hidden long-term roles in research and adjacent areas, including teaching-focused and professional services roles, open to those who start as researchers in Higher Education (HE) and the reasons people select these career paths. As well as conduct research on the prevalence of these career paths, through qualitative interviews and surveys, we will use the results to also create an online web resource showcasing career profiles. The project will explore:  

  • The wealth and variety of roles in research, research support, and education available in HE to those with a research background and what these roles might offer in contrast to the classical lecturer options.  
  • How the skills and experiences of research staff make them eminently employable long-term in a variety of roles.  
  • How far discrimination or related factors affect the choices made against the classical lecturer path to provide further resources for specific groups  
  • Celebrate the value of roles in HE beyond the classical lecturer path.  

We are looking for a researcher(s) who can conduct qualitative and quantitative research for this project and contribute to the development of the resource for King's research staff and the wider King's community. Specific responsibilities cover:  

  • Conduct qualitative interviews of participants mainly in the faculties of Arts & Humanities and Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Sciences willing to share their career journey, and complete follow-up transcription and analyses. 
  • Complete quantitative and qualitative research on project-relevant data, employing methods used to analyse data in the social sciences.  
  • Support the advertising and recruitment of participants, liaising with faculty contacts and other stakeholders as required.  
  • Develop necessary documents for the project and develop reports on completed analyses.  
  • Creating the online web resource for showcasing career profiles, including collaborating with participants to prepare profiles.  
  • Contributing to academic publications where appropriate and relevant.  

​The post is located within the Centre for Research Staff Development, where you would work in a small team, reporting to the team's Research Staff Development & Engagement Consultant, Dr Natasha Rhys.   

This post is offered on an hourly basis and is flexible. All candidates for the post should outline in their application the number of hours per week they would wish to work. The post duration is dependent on the number of hours/days worked, with up to 500 hours available. We will also consider job sharing.

Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting the award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances, the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.



Qualifications

Significant experience at PhD and/or post-PhD level in the social sciences or another relevant subject is preferred.
