Job Description

This is a fantastic opportunity to work on Queen Mary Academy’s new educational research and development project on: 

•    Exploring awarding and continuation gaps with undergraduate Black students 

 

We are recruiting one student researcher for a 15-hour contract. 



The aim of this research is to identify and understand Black students’ perspectives on barriers and facilitators to their academic excellence at QMUL. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Key Performance Indicators shows the largest awarding gap and continuation gaps are experienced by Black students, and this project goal is to inform how Queen Mary Academy and/or other QMUL institutions can support this student population to perform better. You will work with the Queen Mary Academy and be supervised by professional members of staff at the University. 

 

You will be expected to work collaboratively to help run small focus groups, and present and analyse data.  Findings will be shared internally and externally through publication and presentations. 

 

This position is assigned 15 hours. Successful candidates will be expected to complete these hours between May 2024 and June 2024. This role will be paying £13.99 per hour plus holiday pay to the successful candidates. 



We would particularly welcome applications from student who self-identifies as Black / African / Caribbean / Black British/ or any other Black / African / Caribbean background.

 

Responsibilities: 

•    Assist in literature reviews to gather relevant information and background for projects. 

•    Participate in the design and implementation of focus groups

•    Collaborate with project lead to conduct data analysis 

•    Contribute to the preparation of research reports, presentations, and other final outputs.

This is a short-term research assistance role to examine EU and UK copyright law developments related to the Information Society Directive. In total, the project involves 40 hours of research. Specifically, the RA will need to examine UK and EU legislation and case law and scholarly materials relating to copyright law and the extent to which UK law converges/divergences from EU copyright law. The time period to focus on is 1 January 2019 to the present. Particular emphasis should be placed on those areas harmonised by the Information Society Directive (either explicitly or implicitly), namely, originality, subject matter; economic rights; exceptions; and enforcement.

Extensive knowledge of UK and EU copyright law.

Experienced administrator needed, working in person or remotely. 

To support the everyday administration of the Interface project, including file and data management, calendar scheduling, budget tracking with the support of the project lead, social media account management, updating project information, liaising with external and internal stakeholders, events management and additional duties arising. 

The candidate should also be able to start work Monday 6 January 2025. The role runs till end of March, but with a view to further employment if the project requires.



Qualifications

A first degree is essential, and postgraduate experience preferred but not essential. Far more weight will be given to a high level of expertise and experience with managing complex administrative projects. 



Skills

A high level of time management skills, project management expertise, event organisation and budget experience are required, as well as working with spreadsheets, digital file management, minute taking and general organisation. 

This position entails working as a research assistant for a study that investigates the processing of non-standard grammatical constructions in speakers of British English using eye-tracking while reading. The project is led by Eloi Puig-Mayenco from the School of Education, Communication, and Society at King?s College London.

 

The primary responsibilities of the research assistant will involve overseeing participant recruitment and conducting on-site eye-tracking data collection sessions at the Waterloo Bridge Wing building, located on the Waterloo campus. Additionally, the RA will handle initial data trimming and processing. The breakdown of allocated hours for each task is as follows:

 

15 hours for preparation, training, and meetings.

40 hours for testing: accommodating 40 participants with sessions lasting 1 hours each.

5 hours for data processing.

 

The research assistant will receive comprehensive training and mentoring to successfully carry out these responsibilities.

 

Interviews will take place mid-January.

 



Qualifications

BA/MA in Linguistics, Psychology or related discipline. 

 



Skills

Essential:

Familiarity and ability to use Microsoft packages (e.g., good Excel command).

Undergraduate level knowledge in linguistics, psychology and/or education research or related field.

 

Desirable:

Interest in eye-tracking methodologies.

Experience with statistical analysis applied to language-related research.
