Job Description

This advert is for the role of Academic Coordinator for 21 hours per week. An alternative job advert is available for a 1.0 FTE role.

The Academic Coordinator will be joining a small team, the Forensic Biochemistry Research Group, within the Department of Analytical, Environmental and Forensic Sciences. This team will be in constant collaboration with representatives from Kazakhstan and external consultants.

On a day-to-day basis the role holder will be working alongside the Programme Administrator and the Programme Tutor for the coordination and running of the Programme from an early stage until the very end, ensuring the quality and standards of this course as a  programme in higher education. This role will include tasks from administrative housekeeping, budget management, organisation of lectures and other formative activities, including trips inside and outside the UK, and networking and public relations; as well as support and pastoral care for the students. The role holder will also be expected to engage in some teaching activities for the design and delivery of workshops, lectures and other formative activities.

The role holder will be providing support to the Programme Administrator in the following tasks:

  • Contribute to the review, update and enhancement of programme documentation students and staff, including staff and student handbooks 
  • Ensure students are properly enrolled on the Student Register platform and that they have access to all needed resources.
  • Contribute on the design of the course site on the educational online platform KEATS.
  • Ensure all teaching resources are made available on KEATS and that students are made aware of it.
  • Plan and prepare the course timetables using the KCL available software and communicate with students throughout the year. 
  • Co-ordinate and deliver the social events as part of the programme, such as welcome event and award ceremony. 
  • Work with the Programme Administrator and Tutor to plan, schedule and execute all additional educational activities part of the programme. This will involve liaising with internal and external experts in the field of forensic science and law, inviting experts to speak at KCL. 
  • Co-ordinate along with the rest of the team any educational trips outside of campus.
  • Support the Programme Tutor and Administrator in the provision of pastoral care to all students including advising students regarding KCL, Faculty and Departmental regulations and protocols, scheduling student appointments and assisting with any necessary follow-up actions.
  • Provide support to the students with any matters related to life in London, including, but not limited to, NHS registration, public transport and accommodations.
  • Provide data reports and analysis as requested. 
  • Support the Programme Tutor and Administrator in the assessment of the participants throughout the course.
  • Provide the Programme Tutor and Administrator with pedagogical support with the delivery or moderation of different pedagogical activities.

 

General

  • Obtain a detailed understanding of KCL, Faculty and Departmental regulation and policy in order to carry out duties and to provide accurate support and guidance to students and teaching staff. 
  • Draft correspondence and format reports, academic papers and other documentation as appropriate.
  • Undertake general office administrative duties for the team including, filing expenses, paying invoices, filing, photocopying, scanning as required.
  • Contribute to the development of systems and processes designed to enhance the overall quality of the service provided by the programmes administrative team.
  • Attend Faculty and Institutional professional services meetings to share good practice and receive/disseminate information.
  • Commit to your own professional personal development and training.


Qualifications

At least an Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.

It would be desirable if the individual has a master's degree in a relevant subject.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • An understanding of teaching-related admin skills
  • Sound knowledge of administrative and project coordination skills
  • A good knowledge of the principles of teaching and learning
  • Good knowledge of relevant pedagogical skills

Context of the post

We are looking to appoint a current registered Doctoral student at King's College London to work with a multidisciplinary team from the department of Midwifery and King?s Academy on a project funded by the College Education Fund looking to undertake an audit and evaluation of written assessment feedback for BSc Midwifery students. Looking at the student experience of assessment, this project will design an audit tool to undertake review of written assessment feedback given to students after summative assessment submission for students on the BSc Midwifery curriculum.

The project will focus on students where there has been evidence of an attainment gap in higher education (such as students from a minoritised ethnic group and those with  a SpLD) but will be of whole-cohort benefit. There will be 2 workstreams for the project;

  1. Literature review, and development of the audit tool as part of a codesign process with students and educators
  2. An audit of feedback on global assessment across the midwifery programme

Typical paid duties will include:

  • Assisting in building the evidence base for the project, by reviewing the literature on assessment feedback practices in higher education pre-registration healthcare programmes.
  • Writing up findings into a literature review

 Eligibility, hours and pay

To apply, you need to be a current registered Doctoral student at King's College London. 

We expect the role to run November 2024-Feb 2025, however there should be flexibility to allow for project needs to be met. Work is not expected to go beyond Feb 2025.

This post will be paid at a Band 5 salary on a weekly basis. It is anticipated that the hours will be on average 7-7.5 per week (some weeks may be slightly more, some less).

You will be hired on a King's Talent Bank hourly paid contract, and they will undertake a Right to Work check. You will need to ensure that taking on this role is not in breach of King's policies or any funding or immigration conditions.

Support provided

You will be expected to work autonomously, but will have support, including:

  • A project induction including from a member of the study team.
  • The Research Assistant will have one-to-one mentoring meetings with one of the project leads (depending on requirements of the work)
