Racism and Learning Disabilities Research Assistant

 

You will be helping as Research Assistant on the Racism and Learning Disabilities project.  The research team is made up of researchers with and without learning disabilities. 

 

We have been given money from the KCL Participatory Research Seed Corn fund to work together to design a research proposal to understand how racism affects people in services for people with learning disabilities.

 

The project runs until the end of July 2025.  We aim to:

  • Collect information about which people and organisations are working on race and anti-racism in learning disability services
  • Find out what people with learning disabilities, their families and staff teams think about racism in learning disability services
  • Decide on the best way to do research on this subject

 

We will start by doing a scoping of work that is already going on

We will hold two workshops with people with learning disabilities and their supporters 

 

Duties and responsibilities

 

  1. Draw up a ?map? of past and present work on race and racism in learning disability services
  2. Helping to organise the workshops (on 11/06/2025 and 02/7/2025)
  3. Create accessible and easy to read resources and reports for the project
  4. Support the co-researchers as needed

 

We very much welcome applications from racially minoritized groups and from people who speak a community language such as Turkish, Bengali, Arabic etc.

 

Interviews will be held in person at KCL (Waterloo) on 25/04/2025

 



Qualifications

Essential:  A good first degree. Relevant areas might be health sciences, social science, history or geography, creative arts.  

Desirable:  MSc or MA



Skills

Essential experience:

  • Experience of working with people with learning disabilities, either as paid work, or lived experience as a family member or friend.
  • Experience of contributing to a research project

 

Desirable experience:

  • Experience of events management
  • Experience of working with groups

 

Skills:

Excellent communication skills

Comfortable with design software such as Canva, Adobe

Research skills ? online searches, qualitative interviewing, analysing data
